Upper 4 in Castleton

17 September 2008

On the 4 and 5 September Upper 4 ventured north to the Derbyshire village of Castleton to study features of an upland stream, Limestone landscapes, the cave systems and formation of stalagmites and stalactites and the impact of Tourism on this honeypot village.

We also looked at the causes and consequences of urban decline and regeneration in Sheffield and had a very interesting talk at the Tourist Information Centre on the management of a National Park. We took over the youth hostel and the girls rapidly made it home and worked long into the evening debating various possible planning decisions for this area.

As ever the girls were cheerful, hard-working and persistent and their resolve was much to be admired especially as Friday was one of the wettest days this year. We completed all of our tasks although photos had to replace fieldsketches as the paper dissolved before our eyes!

Most girls managed to stay at least partially dry but there were some who despite clear instructions and reminders from the geography staff did not have the correct kit. Please could all parents check that in future girls have stout footwear, a waterproof jacket and umbrella as a minimum for all Geography fieldwork. If there is a problem with this at the time then please contact me as I may be able to help.
