Eco Schools by Laurel Stewart (L3C)
Eco-Schools is an environmentally friendly committee. Anyone is allowed to join the club, as long as they are in Year 6 or above.
What we do is try to make the school a greener place; so this year we organised some ‘green' days, one of them was ‘Girls Go Green' day. On ‘Girls Go Green' day, we came into school in green hand-me-downs or old clothes. Also we made our own pledge, on a green foot print, to show we care for the environment.
The school has got compost bins which is great for school wastage. In the lunch hall there is a new plastic cup recycling box, which some people still need to get used to. There is a new pool cover, that doesn't let the heat out and is environmentally friendly.
There is an Environmental Club in Lower 3 (Year 6) that has made some signs that say ‘turn off lights' and ‘turn off taps', to encourage people to use less energy; We placed them above taps and lights around the school.
On the 28 March 2009 there was an Earth hour called ‘The Big Switch Off'. This is where we turned off all our power, around the world. Most of the school took part in this and together we saved a lot of energy.
Our aim is to get people to walk or cycle to school or car share, to save our environment. We have reached a bronze award of excellence for the environment - we are aiming for silver.
During the year the eco-schools have made a big difference to the school and Bedford.
We encourage all our school community to live greener lives and make greener choices. It is a great committee to be part of.
