Mencap Playschemes by Clare Greenwood, L5
Volunteering is good for everyone- the people you help have a more enjoyable time, and you gain valuable experience. The Mencap summer playschemes are therefore an ideal opportunity to get involved.
Mencap describe themselves as "The voice of learning disability". They are a charity working to transform lives of people affected by mental disability. In summer, they run playschemes- activity weeks for children. As all of these children have special needs, Mencap needs a lot of volunteer helpers, which is where Bedford High school pupils can help.
Mr Bonny, a representative and the treasurer of Mencap, gave an insightful assembly in which he told us about the playschemes and particularly the benefits to us as volunteers and to the children. We would like to thank Mr Bonny for taking the time to talk to us.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to urge everyone to consider applying to be a part of the Mencap playschemes. Mrs Galvez, as our charity co-ordinator, has a number of application forms. It will be a summer of good times for all!
