National Finals Medal Winner

07 July 2010

Lewis Hamilton without the car' is how I described Kate Axford when she participated at the East Area Prep Schools Championships in June. Kate stood on the start line in her first ever 1500m race and 5m37s later she had qualified for the National Finals!

On Monday she walked out onto the track at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, the ‘Wembley' of athletics, to face a top quality field of athletes from all over the country, from Scotland to Cornwall.

The race was a real adrenalin story as the young runners had to combat nerves and a stiff breeze for three and three quarter laps of the track on the biggest stage of their young lives. The two leaders pulled away at the bell. It was all about the coveted 3rd place! Kate rose to the challenge as she stayed relaxed and focussed. Her two nearest rivals made their move on the final bend. Kate responded by shifting into 5th gear and sprinted triumphantly away down the home straight in front of a cheering grandstand to finish 3rd in the country!

Blow the vuvuzelas, bang the drums, beat the cymbals - Kate Axford, District Champion at 1200m and now Bronze Medallist at the National Prep School Finals - it doesn't get much better than this!

MANY CONGRATULATIONS - BEDFORD HIGH ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU!
