CCF Penhale Camp

15 September 2008

Girls from BHSG joined cadets from the rest of the Bedford School CCF contingent for the Annual Camp, held this year at Penhale in Cornwall; this was a central camp, with cadets from other schools attending.

For almost a year, we had all imagined ourselves on a Cornish beach, enjoying the July sunshine: the reality, high winds and almost continuous rain, was very different. Despite the difficult climatic conditions, the cadets threw themselves into the events with energy and enthusiasm.

A range day, with live firing of the 5.56 Light Support Weapon, was one of the highlights of the weeks package of events; other activities included an assault course, orienteering, and section attacks.

The overnight exercise was challenging, as the weather worsened, but the range area used, being amongst a huge and ancient series of sand dunes, added drama.

On the final day, cadets took part in adventurous training, with a choice from coasteering, surfing and kite boarding; finally, for this, at last, the weather eased off.

In the competions at the end of the week the cadets gave a good account of themselves, and were well placed in a number of activities.

Penhale was a memorable camp in many ways!
