Pastoral Support
Pastoral care here at Bedford High School for Girls reflects the aims of our Mission Statement in striving to create a positive environment in which individuals are challenged and inspired to achieve their potential. It also encompasses the essential elements of the Every Child Matters agenda.
All staff, especially form staff, are asked to be especially watchful of new girls, particularly boarders. Our ‘First Friends' scheme will help and supports your daughter during her settling in period. We also have an induction programme which aims to promote her ability to enjoy, achieve and make a positive contribution to the school community.
Our housemistresses and resident assistant housemistresses have all spent many years working in the pastoral arena. Each of our boarding houses has a resident housemistress who is responsible for the academic and pastoral welfare of each girl in her house. The house team will also include one or two assistant housemistresses who are residential and further members of the team of assistants who help out at varying times of the day and weekends.
This is in addition to the pastoral care and support available from the staff in our International Support Department, our nursing staff and other staff within the main school.
While girls can approach any member of staff for support, each pupil is given a list of specific contacts for particular issues, including Mrs Surtees, our Assistant Headmistress (Pastoral/Boarding).
If you would like to see a copy of our full Pastoral Care policy, please let us know and we will send it to you.
Medical
We have two nurses who are available throughout the school day, and all Housemistresses and Assistant Housemistress are qualified First Aiders. All boarders are registered with the School Doctor who runs a surgery once a week in school. House Staff will arrange appointments and accompany girls to the doctors, dentist, and opticians. We will keep you informed at all times. You will be sent a medical form for completion, which should be returned to the Registrar before arrival at school.
