After hearing the devastating news about the earthquake in Haiti, the Charities Committee knew this was a worthwhile cause we needed to support.

Then came the thinking; what can we do to raise support and donations for this worthwhile cause? Well, there was really only one answer, start the ball rolling with a good old fashioned cake sale! Sugar, chocolate and several different types of e-numbers all at once is never a good idea (which may explain why cake sales have been few and far between in the last couple of years at the High School) but this was a special occasion and raising money took priority.

The bay was lavishly decorated with all manner of sugary delights and everyone stormed to the tables like bees to a honey pot! After the frenzy died down, we sat back and counted our bounty. We were astonished to see that over £120 had been raised, a feat we never thought a cake sale could achieve! Thank You to all girls who donated cakes, and to everyone who bought one.

Secondly, we'd like to say a huge Thank You to the eleven members of staff who not only gave up their lunchtime but their dignity too for this great cause. At lunchtime of Thursday 21^st, the pupils in the senior school congregated in the playground to witness the slaughter as teachers went head to head in a Netball match full of speed, excellent hand-eye coordination and, er...very few goals. With Head Girl Jess Duncan as referee to keep the teachers in line, the game was a bit of a role reversal, but as no one was particularly sure of the rules, the whole affair descended into total chaos anyway.

Thanks to the girls never wanting to miss an opportunity to see their teachers lying in a crumpled heap on the tarmac or being hit round the head with a ball that they've failed to catch, we managed to raise an amazing £205 from donations, and I think everybody would agree (even the participants!) that the game was a lot of fun!  

I know that this superb total wouldn't have happened without some very special people- our teachers! Without their willingness to hit the court and shake the dust out of their netball skirts (not to mention risking making complete fools of themselves in front of a screaming mass of girls), this amount of money would not have been raised. Therefore, we would like to say a special thank you to the teachers who participated.

N.B. The 'Charities Committee' does not accept responsibility for any members of staff harmed mentally or physically during this event, but would like to wish them all the best with their recovery, and hopes to see them on court again next time.

A total of £120 was raised from the cake sale, and a further £205 from donations at the Netball match. The current total from all of the fundraising and donations stands at £500, with still some more to be counted. 

Therefore, we would like to say a huge thank you to all the people who donated, as their money will go to Unicef, which will aim to give aid to the people and children of Haiti who have been affected by the Earthquake; the donations will bring hope and help.
