Many congratulations to star athletes, Megan Barnicoat and Violet Whitaker (Year 6), who impressed at the first round of the Eastern Young Athletes League (EYAL), which took place at Peterborough on Sunday 1st May.

Representing Bedford and County Athletics Club, Megan and Violet won their respective U13 800m races, on their track debuts, Megan (2min 42) and Violet (2m 47). This fantastic result has led to both of them being selected to represent Team Bedfordshire in the UK Youth Development League which starts this weekend.

Megan reflected: “I have never found running easy but have tried to improve at training so I am really pleased with how I raced, and it is great fun doing it with a friend as well.”

Violet added: “I love training at the athletics club. Although I get nervous before a race, the competition experience is really fun. I am also really pleased to have done so well in an older age group and love running with Megan.”

Following success racing for BGS against older students at the Bedfordshire School Cross Country Championships in February, Megan and Violet joined the Athletics Club to develop their skills.

The EYAL is a track and field league for boys and girls in the under 13, under 15 and under 17 age groups. 24 clubs take part in 5 fixtures a year in a ’round robin’ league basis. There are finals for the top six clubs and a plate final for places 7-12.
