Mrs Hooker (PE Teacher)

Our talented athletes have produced stellar individual and team performances on the track and field at District events this past week.

On Friday 20th May, the Years 7 and 8 athletics teams participated in the pouring rain in the District Athletics at the Bedford International Athletic Stadium (BIAS). Over 20 schools competed and entered one athlete per event. The morning saw BGS qualify for the finals in both Years 7 and 8 teams relays, 100m, 200m, and the Year 8s also qualified for the 300m and the Hurdles final.

The 800m and 1500m were straight finals with Amelia Perry (Year 8) running a Personal Best and Zofia Wylezek (Year 8) winning the 800m gold medal in a time of 2 minutes 42 seconds. Sienna Burger then put in a fantastic performance in the High Jump, claiming the top podium place.

The afternoon finals saw lots of Personal Best times and some great performances. A special mention goes to our winning Year 7 relay team and Jaya Hall (Year 7) for winning the 200m by a significant margin. The event had a great atmosphere and we are thrilled to say that our Year 7 team placed 2nd overall.

Our success on the track and field continued on Tuesday 24th May at the District League Athletics Finals. The Years 7 and 8 A and B teams have been competing in the local league every Tuesday afternoon since the start of term. Following the final round, we were announced as one of the eight finalists to compete at this event which took place at BIAS.

In order to maximise points, we needed to enter two athletes in each event. There were outstanding performances by Ellie McCutcheon (Year 8) who won the 300m, and Lara Spajic (Year 8) and Jaya Hall (Year 7) who both won their 200m. One relay team placed second, the other won. They have been an absolute pleasure to coach, represented BGS with maturity and they made us proud! The team placed 3rd overall.

We look forward to starting the Year 5 and 6 Athletics League after half-term.
