Our creative Year 6 sewing bees were delighted to complete their beautiful owl appliqué cushions this week. Learning new skills such as appliqué with a web, the pupils have hugely grown in confidence using a sewing machine. Many of whom had never used a sewing machine before let alone to have the skill to sew around a range of shapes and even understand how to change stitches and sew a seam.

The project encourages pupils to upcycle old fabrics and scraps to complete their interpretation of the owl design and I hope some of the girls will consider how they can use the skills they have learned to explore their own ideas and designs for future creative projects.

Minnu Sooraj (Year 6) said: “‘I enjoyed learning how to use the sewing machine to do the stitching as it was very satisfying being able to sew so quickly.”

Hattie Williams (Year 6) said: “I liked the hand sewing at the end once we had stuffed the cushion because I have never been able to successfully do this before.”

Well done to all Year 6s who have made some lovely cushions!
