Street food Showcase!

Whole School Food and Nutrition

By Mrs Lovett (Head of Food and Nutrition)

It has been a busy year for Year 9 Food and Nutrition students who have completed their Cakes and Bakes and International Cuisine units as well as spending this term preparing for their Street Food Showcase.

This is an opportunity for them to show off what they have learnt in their Food lessons at BGS. They were required to carry out some research into street food, which encouraged them to see alternative perspectives. They developed their creativity by planning new ideas for dishes to make and may have had to abandon one idea for a better one. In order to be well prepared for the event, they needed to write a plan and follow their time plan.

The actual event itself required them to spend the afternoon making their dishes which were to be displayed and served to their families and staff in the evening. They worked unbelievably hard! Many of them came to start cooking during their lunch break and didn’t get to sit down until the event itself.

Guests commented on how delicious the food was and were impressed by what they had created. During our lessons, we have been working on presentation and this was highlighted in the brilliant way the dishes were presented. Many of the students demonstrated a wide range of skills. I’m sure many of the concepts they developed would make very successful Street Food Vans.
