We are thrilled to share the outstanding achievements of Etienne Maughan (Upper Sixth), who has continued to excel in the world of athletics.

Following her victory in the 100m hurdles at the National Athletics League (NAL) meet in early June, Etienne showcased her exceptional form once again at the English Schools Athletics Championships held at Birmingham’s Commonwealth Stadium last weekend.

Representing BGS, Etienne concluded her English Schools career on a high note by securing a well-deserved silver medal in the Senior Girls 100m Hurdles, adding to the bronze she won in the 80m Hurdles event in 2021. She achieved an impressive fourth personal best of the season, clocking a remarkable time of 14.00 seconds to win her heat, and then further improved her performance by shaving off another one-hundredth of a second, recording an incredible 13.99 seconds in the final.

Etienne also represented Bedfordshire at the meet by adding a gold medal in the 4 x 100m relay event where the well drilled quartet stormed away to win the “A” final in a time of 45.05 seconds, beating the time of the winners of the B final by over a second. With this being the first running of this particular event, their time will mean that Bedfordshire currently hold five Championships Best Performances from over the 98 years of these national championships.

Etienne reflected on her achievements: “I loved spending a couple days in Birmingham for English Schools, especially in the fun, relaxed and supportive environment of the Bedfordshire and Luton team. Running a personal best, even when the wind was against me, and silver medal was a great achievement for me and I’m excited to see how I can build on this as the season continues, with improvements still to be made. Winning the mixed 4x100 relay topped off the champs and it was great to win alongside my teammates in something that we all really wanted to execute well.”

Whilst there is no school’s international for seniors, Etienne is stepping onto a bigger stage having been invited to compete in the 100m hurdles at the UK Athletics Championships in Manchester this weekend.

We wish Etienne the best of luck as she takes on this exciting challenge.
