Bedfordshire Explorer

26 September 2008

One of BHSG's Lower 4 pupils, Kimberly Clifton, recently won a competition to become a Bedfordshire explorer.  Here's her news:

"I won a competition to become one of eight Bedfordshire explorers.  Winning the competition has given me the opportunity to go to different places, events and activities for free.  Once I've visited, I write a report about whether it was an interesting, fun or even boring place to visit.  The report is then sent to Bedfordshire County Council and they put it on their website http://www.experiencebedfordshire.co.uk/kids  The best report each month is published in a magazine called Living Locally.

I found out about this competition through Living Locally and on Chiltern FM.  I had to write why Bedford was so brilliant in twenty words.  When we won the competition, we all met up at Woburn Safari Park for a behind the scenes tour of the squirrel monkeys, met a journalist and collected our first mission.  Whilst we were there, the local TV news crew came and filmed us.  It is now on the internet at http://www.local-news.tv/schols_and_kids/v304-experience_bedfordshire.  I am looking forward to a year of activities and journalistic reports."

GCSE Results

Girls have once again achieved some truly excellent results in their GCSE examinations this summer. 29% of all results were at A* grade, 57% A*-A and 80% A*-B.

Carla Barberio, Rebecca Murray, Hannah Short and Surina Taneja all achieved 10A* grades, Tessa Forbes and Chloe Scott 9A* grades, Connie Fan, Yasmin Jamil and Frances Whittaker-Wood 8A* and Emily Myrtle, Lauren Roberts and Georgia Austin Greenall 7 A* grades.

Eighteen girls were sitting their examinations having spent, in most cases, only 3 years studying in English, and yet between them they amassed results which closely mirrored the overall percentages: 21% A*, 54% A*-A and 76% A*-B.

Although I am sad that our boarders are unable to progress to Bedford Girls' School for their Sixth Form studies, I am delighted that most of our very top achievers will be going on to take A level or IB courses there.

I wish every girl who left Bedford High School at the end of Upper 5 the very best of luck for their future studies.
