Lower 4 Invitation to Bedford School Chemistry Lecture

19 February 2009

I would like to cordially invite your Lower 4 / Year 8 girls to a Chemistry lecture which will be given by Mr Irfan Latif (Deputy Head Academic of the Upper School).

The lecture will last for approximately one hour on Tuesday 10 March 2009 beginning at 14.45 (finishing at 15.45 to allow time for the girls to return to BHSG for transport home as usual) and will take place in the EMH.

Michael Mallalieu, Bedford School

Mr Latif's Biography:

Irfan Latif is a chemistry graduate from King's College, London and has been teaching chemistry for nearly 14 years. He has taught at the Haberdashers' Aske's School for Boys in Elstree, Whitgift School in South Croydon, St Benedict's School, Ealing and is currently teaching at Bedford School.

He is a member of the RSC Education Committee for Middlesex and Chilterns and is keen to promote the subject and inspire and enthuse young scientists. He is a judge for the Salter's Festival of Chemistry competition and also presents the innovative Adventures in Science demonstration talks for junior school children.

GCSE Results

Girls have once again achieved some truly excellent results in their GCSE examinations this summer. 29% of all results were at A* grade, 57% A*-A and 80% A*-B.

Carla Barberio, Rebecca Murray, Hannah Short and Surina Taneja all achieved 10A* grades, Tessa Forbes and Chloe Scott 9A* grades, Connie Fan, Yasmin Jamil and Frances Whittaker-Wood 8A* and Emily Myrtle, Lauren Roberts and Georgia Austin Greenall 7 A* grades.

Eighteen girls were sitting their examinations having spent, in most cases, only 3 years studying in English, and yet between them they amassed results which closely mirrored the overall percentages: 21% A*, 54% A*-A and 76% A*-B.

Although I am sad that our boarders are unable to progress to Bedford Girls' School for their Sixth Form studies, I am delighted that most of our very top achievers will be going on to take A level or IB courses there.

I wish every girl who left Bedford High School at the end of Upper 5 the very best of luck for their future studies.
