Elora Parocki - Judo Silver

07 October 2008

Fighting at the Samurai Judo Club in Kidderminster in their Junior Green Belt and Under Championship, Elora started slowly and won one fight out of 3 to take the bronze in the u44kg category.

The u44 girls were given the opportunity to participate in the u48kg category and Elora by now getting her fighting head on agreed.

(i)  First up was a chance to gain some revenge on a previous loss in the u44kg category.  Elora fought well for a position and achieved a small score with a hip throw.  Following the throw Elora found she had landed on her opponent in a hold down which she maintained for the 25 seconds she needed to win.

(ii)  Showing improved mat craft Elora noticed her opponent constantly backing off the mat and won the fight on a penalty score.

(iii)  Elora was then up against a much older (and taller) girl.  After getting a firm grip and pulling the opponent to her level Elora was constantly being pushed backwards.  Elora clearly decided to attempt (for the first time in competition) a stomach throw for a high score.  Elora finished the bout with another stomach throw for a second high score and a compound win.

(iv) The final fight against the eventual gold medallist was a tense affair and even though Elora had seen how the girl was throwing in the previous rounds, was out manoeuvred and was eventually thrown for an Ippon.

Elora finished with a hard won silver medal.

This was an excellent effort from Elora and will no doubt help to build her confidence for a bigger tournament later this month.

GCSE Results

Girls have once again achieved some truly excellent results in their GCSE examinations this summer. 29% of all results were at A* grade, 57% A*-A and 80% A*-B.

Carla Barberio, Rebecca Murray, Hannah Short and Surina Taneja all achieved 10A* grades, Tessa Forbes and Chloe Scott 9A* grades, Connie Fan, Yasmin Jamil and Frances Whittaker-Wood 8A* and Emily Myrtle, Lauren Roberts and Georgia Austin Greenall 7 A* grades.

Eighteen girls were sitting their examinations having spent, in most cases, only 3 years studying in English, and yet between them they amassed results which closely mirrored the overall percentages: 21% A*, 54% A*-A and 76% A*-B.

Although I am sad that our boarders are unable to progress to Bedford Girls' School for their Sixth Form studies, I am delighted that most of our very top achievers will be going on to take A level or IB courses there.

I wish every girl who left Bedford High School at the end of Upper 5 the very best of luck for their future studies.
