Double County Champion 2010!

28 June 2010

Athletics is a test of oneself, striving to some new limit of performance or endurance. Confidence and self assertion are needed together with talent, energy and courage - it is as much a mental battle as it is physical.

Picture this..........the athletes are called to their marks. Hannah goes through a familiar routine of checking every detail to ensure feet and hands are well positioned. The starter raises his gun and the crowd edge forward in anticipation. 'Get Set' and the eyes look down the track totally focussed on the lane ahead and every sinew in her body is poised and completely still. The gun goes off and she drives off the line and glides over the first hurdle.

She is relaxed and graceful, gazelle-like as she slides over the eight barriers, her two closest rivals left trailing in her wake and she hits the tape in first place to become County Champion in the 80m Hurdles.

'Swifter, Stronger, Higher', the Olympic motto. After showing how swift she was over the sprint hurdles, Hannah moved to the High Jump and raised the bar with a stunning personal best jump of 1m50 to be crowned 'Top of the Flops'.

Hannah Conquest is the Bedfordshire County Champion in the High Jump and Sprint Hurdles for 2010.

MANY CONGRATULATIONS!

Mrs Stedman

GCSE Results

Girls have once again achieved some truly excellent results in their GCSE examinations this summer. 29% of all results were at A* grade, 57% A*-A and 80% A*-B.

Carla Barberio, Rebecca Murray, Hannah Short and Surina Taneja all achieved 10A* grades, Tessa Forbes and Chloe Scott 9A* grades, Connie Fan, Yasmin Jamil and Frances Whittaker-Wood 8A* and Emily Myrtle, Lauren Roberts and Georgia Austin Greenall 7 A* grades.

Eighteen girls were sitting their examinations having spent, in most cases, only 3 years studying in English, and yet between them they amassed results which closely mirrored the overall percentages: 21% A*, 54% A*-A and 76% A*-B.

Although I am sad that our boarders are unable to progress to Bedford Girls' School for their Sixth Form studies, I am delighted that most of our very top achievers will be going on to take A level or IB courses there.

I wish every girl who left Bedford High School at the end of Upper 5 the very best of luck for their future studies.
