Malta Swimming Tour 2010

20 April 2010

On Tuesday 6th April 39 girls (26 from Bedford High School for Girls and 13 from Dame Alice Harpur School) and 4 staff embarked on a six day swimming tour to Malta. The trip was varied with training in Malta's amazing national 50m pool, a foam party on the opening night, an informal supper at the High Commission, fun and games at Golden Sands beach followed by bowling and shopping.

The training culminated in the girls competing in the Malta 17th Easter International Swimming Meet. Countries competing included; Italy, France, Sweden, Malta, English clubs and the girls representing Great Britain. It was the first time most of the girls had competed in a 50m pool and also for many their first taste of international competition. All girls rose to the challenge with many personal best's being achieved and medals being won. A special mention must go to Maddy Webber who not only swam in all six events but came away with a bronze medal in the 200m Individual Medley. Medals were also won by Nicola Pasquire and Anna-Daisy Stephens from Dame Alice.

All girls embraced the whole experience and many new friendships were formed. There were many highlights and great memories for the girls. The girls were great company and outstanding ambassadors for both schools, which make the future of Bedford Girls' School, look very promising.

I would like to thank the fantastic parents for all their fundraising efforts and their help and support for the girls making the tour possible. Also thank you to Mrs Keyte, Ms Calder and Miss Fisher for all their hard work and support in the run up to and during the tour.

GCSE Results

Girls have once again achieved some truly excellent results in their GCSE examinations this summer. 29% of all results were at A* grade, 57% A*-A and 80% A*-B.

Carla Barberio, Rebecca Murray, Hannah Short and Surina Taneja all achieved 10A* grades, Tessa Forbes and Chloe Scott 9A* grades, Connie Fan, Yasmin Jamil and Frances Whittaker-Wood 8A* and Emily Myrtle, Lauren Roberts and Georgia Austin Greenall 7 A* grades.

Eighteen girls were sitting their examinations having spent, in most cases, only 3 years studying in English, and yet between them they amassed results which closely mirrored the overall percentages: 21% A*, 54% A*-A and 76% A*-B.

Although I am sad that our boarders are unable to progress to Bedford Girls' School for their Sixth Form studies, I am delighted that most of our very top achievers will be going on to take A level or IB courses there.

I wish every girl who left Bedford High School at the end of Upper 5 the very best of luck for their future studies.
