Champions: U10 Mini Hockey
On Wednesday 11 March the U10 'A' hockey team arrived at Dame Alice to play in the year 5 mini hockey tournament. The girls were in high spirits and definitely had already won the award for being the most vocal team before the tournament had even begun!
Their first game was against The Perse Panthers. BHSG proved they were the stronger team and dominated the game. With the games only being 10minutes long the girls knew that scoring every opportunity was important. Octavia Cavill proved to be a real asset to the team with her storming runs down the right wing which assisted Kate Axford in converting her first goal of the tournament. Another goal was scored after a fantastic run from Elena Salmon who passed the ball into the 'D' for Octavia Cavill to convert her first goal of the tournament. The final score was 2-0 to BHSG.
Winning your first game in a tournament is always important as this gives the team confidence which was essential for the girls' next game against Bedford Modern School Birds.
The girls knew that they would be strong as they had lost 6-2 to them at the start of the season. BHSG proved that they had become a very talented team over the last few months and where not prepared to lose the game. After some solid defending from Lily Pettifar, Rebecca Downing-Holmes and Katie Parrish the game remained a draw. Special mention should go to Ffion Lucas who made two brilliant saves to keep BHSG in the game.
The last game to play in the group was against DAHS Dodgers. With some fresh legs up front with Ellie Collet the girls had some added pace to their attack. After a brilliant run down the right wing from Octavia Cavill the ball was crossed into the 'D' to Elena Salmon who calmly swept the ball first time into the bottom left hand corner to score the goal of the tournament!! Elena was now more determined to add to her goal tally and after another fantastic early shot at goal brought this up to two goals. Ellie Collet assisted in the next goal after making a tackle on the edge of the 'D' which meant the ball fell to Octavia who slotted another goal home to make the final score 3-0. Player of the match for this game was Elena Salmon with two fantastic goals to secure her team's victory.
This win meant that the girls went through as winners of their group and would now need to challenge the top two teams from the other group.
Their next game was against Bedford Modern School Beavers. The girls again knew that this was going to be a tough game and that they needed to now work hard and concentrate on their roles within the team. BHSG proved to be the stronger team and maintained the majority of the possession throughout the game. Kate Axford converted after some lovely skill to beat two players and then placing the ball in the corner of the goal. The final score was 1-0 to BHSG.
As with most local tournaments the final game always seems to fall against Dame Alice. Win this and the girls would be crowned tournament winners and retain the trophy for a second year running.
The girls stepped onto the pitch with pride ready to give it their all in the final game. I could not have asked for more grit and determination from the girls and they really did themselves proud both on and off the pitch. The defence were solid and did not let Dame Alice enter their 'D' to have a shot. As a result of their fantastic efforts the ball remained with the forwards for the majority of the game. With some fantastic linking play from Kate Axford, Octavia Cavill took the ball with confidence towards the 'D' where she calmly took the ball round a defender and fired her shot passed the keeper.
The final score was 1-0 to BHSG and were to be crowned the tournament winners!!
Player of the tournament went to Octavia Cavill.
Winning this tournament is such a big achievement for the girls and they should feel proud of their performance today. The winning team were: Ffion Lucas, Katie Parresh, Rebecca Downing-Holmes, Lily Pettifar (c), Ellie Collett, Octavia Cavill, Kate Axford and Elena Salmon.
Well done again- what stars you all are.
Miss Mason
