BHSG at MK

27 January 2009

Last year the Orchestra, Highstyle and Chapel Choir successfully auditioned for the first Milton Keynes Schools' Prom, and this long-awaited event was held last week at the imposing venue of the MK Theatre.

Nine schools were involved and this concert (which was non-competitive) proved to have a real festival atmosphere.  Introduced and compered by the conductor and broadcaster Hilary Davan Wetton, a wide range of musical performances was given.  Other schools contributing included Queenswood, Tring Park and Sir Henry Floyd, Aylesbury.

BHSG was chosen to close the first half and our three groups demonstrated the breadth of musical activity in the Music Department.

Orchestra gave a fine and vigorous performance of the first movement of Mozart's G minor Symphony (no 40).  Chapel Choir, with their distinctive pure sound, sang three items, including a setting of Bunyan's Pilgrim Song and Highstyle showed their flair and polish in Like a Star and If I ain't got you.

Our contribution to the evening was significant and the audience was impressed by the quality of performance and the very high level of accomplishment which our students achieve.  The occasion was most memorable and the experience will be long-remembered.

GCSE Results

Girls have once again achieved some truly excellent results in their GCSE examinations this summer. 29% of all results were at A* grade, 57% A*-A and 80% A*-B.

Carla Barberio, Rebecca Murray, Hannah Short and Surina Taneja all achieved 10A* grades, Tessa Forbes and Chloe Scott 9A* grades, Connie Fan, Yasmin Jamil and Frances Whittaker-Wood 8A* and Emily Myrtle, Lauren Roberts and Georgia Austin Greenall 7 A* grades.

Eighteen girls were sitting their examinations having spent, in most cases, only 3 years studying in English, and yet between them they amassed results which closely mirrored the overall percentages: 21% A*, 54% A*-A and 76% A*-B.

Although I am sad that our boarders are unable to progress to Bedford Girls' School for their Sixth Form studies, I am delighted that most of our very top achievers will be going on to take A level or IB courses there.

I wish every girl who left Bedford High School at the end of Upper 5 the very best of luck for their future studies.
