Successful Scottish Open Judo Championships

12 August 2008

The summer holidays meant only four girls made the trip to Scotland for the 2008 Scottish Open Judo Championships, but their efforts were well worth the trip.

Hannah Rogers fought in the girls under 45kg class where she showed great determination to win a Bronze medal.

Elora Parocki and Christine Tavengwa were both entered into the girls under 40kg group where they were up against some good opponents. Although Christine is very inexperienced, she showed a lot of promise with a gutsy performance of strength and determination to win Bronze. With a bit more work on her skills, she will be a force to be reckoned with in the near future.  Elora put up a brave battle to take the Silver having beaten Christine in the semi-final.

Lizzie Walton was unlucky to lose her first fight in the Ladies under 60kg group. Having thrown her opponent on her back, the referee somehow decided it was not worthy of a score. Her opponent did win however with a quality throw for Ippon. Lizzie finished out of the medals but should be proud of the effort she put in.    Not only did Lizzie participate, she also spent the rest of her time on the officials table where she was in charge of timing and recording the days fighting. For her efforts, she was awarded her Class A timekeeping badge. This means she is now qualified to both teach and examine new timekeepers for their first award.

The weather was great as were the girl's performances. On the whole it was another terrific result.

GCSE Results

Girls have once again achieved some truly excellent results in their GCSE examinations this summer. 29% of all results were at A* grade, 57% A*-A and 80% A*-B.

Carla Barberio, Rebecca Murray, Hannah Short and Surina Taneja all achieved 10A* grades, Tessa Forbes and Chloe Scott 9A* grades, Connie Fan, Yasmin Jamil and Frances Whittaker-Wood 8A* and Emily Myrtle, Lauren Roberts and Georgia Austin Greenall 7 A* grades.

Eighteen girls were sitting their examinations having spent, in most cases, only 3 years studying in English, and yet between them they amassed results which closely mirrored the overall percentages: 21% A*, 54% A*-A and 76% A*-B.

Although I am sad that our boarders are unable to progress to Bedford Girls' School for their Sixth Form studies, I am delighted that most of our very top achievers will be going on to take A level or IB courses there.

I wish every girl who left Bedford High School at the end of Upper 5 the very best of luck for their future studies.
