U14 County Hockey Champions

16 October 2009

Tuesday 13 October - the day of the U14 County Hockey Tournament. Six teams battling it out to win the accolade of County Champions and a place in the Midlands Zonal Round.

The message was clear - enjoy the occasion and give lots of perspiration and don't get weighed down by expectation. What followed was INSPIRATION!

BMS provided the opening game and a goal from Louisa Cocksedge settled early nerves and confidence began to seep through the team.

It is the season of Halloween and there were lots of tricks and plenty of treats in the games that followed!

A 4-0 win against Queensbury with goals from Louisa, Ella Stanley, and two from captain Alice Devaney, one a great individual effort, was followed by a superb High 5 goals against Cedars. Alice and Louisa both scored twice and Bella Bonadies got on the scoresheet with a neat finish on the left post.

Five more goals against Sharnbrook kept spirits high. Louisa bagged another two goals and there was one apiece for Hana Staddon, Alice Devaney and Chrissie Bland. The attitude was first rate and the girls were ready for their final challenge of the afternoon - the game against Dame Alice! It was time to conjure up some special magic!

In a swashbuckling performance, the green shirts of the High School dominated possession for long spells in the match. Chrissie Bland 'ghosted' in on the far post for the opening goal and the players kept their foot on the pedal as they attacked with pace and intent. Louisa scored her seventh goal of the tournament to make it 2-0 as the final whistle blew. 17 goals scored and none conceded -BEDFORD HIGH WERE CROWNED U14 COUNTY CHAMPIONS FOR 2009!

Congratulations to all the girls and we wish them all good luck in the Zonal Round on 18 November.

GCSE Results

Girls have once again achieved some truly excellent results in their GCSE examinations this summer. 29% of all results were at A* grade, 57% A*-A and 80% A*-B.

Carla Barberio, Rebecca Murray, Hannah Short and Surina Taneja all achieved 10A* grades, Tessa Forbes and Chloe Scott 9A* grades, Connie Fan, Yasmin Jamil and Frances Whittaker-Wood 8A* and Emily Myrtle, Lauren Roberts and Georgia Austin Greenall 7 A* grades.

Eighteen girls were sitting their examinations having spent, in most cases, only 3 years studying in English, and yet between them they amassed results which closely mirrored the overall percentages: 21% A*, 54% A*-A and 76% A*-B.

Although I am sad that our boarders are unable to progress to Bedford Girls' School for their Sixth Form studies, I am delighted that most of our very top achievers will be going on to take A level or IB courses there.

I wish every girl who left Bedford High School at the end of Upper 5 the very best of luck for their future studies.
