U16 County Hockey Champions

07 November 2009

Remember, remember the 2nd November

Gunpowder, treason and plot......................

Light the blue touch paper and the U16 County Hockey Tournament was off!

The High School team shot out of the blocks v BMS and Frankie Scott's opening goal from the edge of the 'D' was hit like a rocket and her second strike was equally explosive. A goal by Rosie Knight and three from Claudia Barker was a reward for some clever movement down the right with Hannah Ayres, Izzy Pugh, Becca Wilkinson and Maya Thrasher all involved. A 6-0 victory provided the perfect start but the fireworks were just beginning!

Jess Logan continued to be a mere spectator in goal in the next game against Sharnbrook. The Becky Duo, Dorgham and Burgoine, kept the door firmly shut at the back before Rosie Knight ghosted in on the left post to open the scoring. Becky Wright had an impressive game and added a second after a neat exchange of passes with Claudia. Frankie's finish was emphatic from a penalty corner and Claudia added the fourth for a convincing victory.

Challney were next up and it was High 5's all round as Rosie Leech bagged two goals, Ellie Oakley one from close range and Becca Wilkinson and Frankie Scott powered in a goal apiece from the edge of the circle for a 5-0 win. The team were on fire and were ready for the sparks to fly in the final game - their opponents - Dame Alice!

The green shirts tore into the light blue defence and lay siege to their goal. Their goalkeeper made a string of great saves but we had the ability, motivation and attitude and were not to be denied! A barrage of penalty corners, a shot that rattled the post and several near misses before Frankie Scott broke the deadlock with a stunning corner strike and Claudia Barker added a second to complete a 2-0 victory. 17 goals scored and none conceded - BEDFORD HIGH ARE U16 COUNTY CHAMPIONS FOR 2009!

Congratulations to all the girls - next stop the Midlands Zonal round on 16 November!

Team: R Wright (c), J Logan, R Burgoine, S Skipper, R Dorgham, R Wilkinson, F Scott, I Pugh, H Ayres, M Thrasher, C Hall, R Leech, E Oakley, C Barker, F Jensen, R Knight.

GCSE Results

Girls have once again achieved some truly excellent results in their GCSE examinations this summer. 29% of all results were at A* grade, 57% A*-A and 80% A*-B.

Carla Barberio, Rebecca Murray, Hannah Short and Surina Taneja all achieved 10A* grades, Tessa Forbes and Chloe Scott 9A* grades, Connie Fan, Yasmin Jamil and Frances Whittaker-Wood 8A* and Emily Myrtle, Lauren Roberts and Georgia Austin Greenall 7 A* grades.

Eighteen girls were sitting their examinations having spent, in most cases, only 3 years studying in English, and yet between them they amassed results which closely mirrored the overall percentages: 21% A*, 54% A*-A and 76% A*-B.

Although I am sad that our boarders are unable to progress to Bedford Girls' School for their Sixth Form studies, I am delighted that most of our very top achievers will be going on to take A level or IB courses there.

I wish every girl who left Bedford High School at the end of Upper 5 the very best of luck for their future studies.
