Duke of Edinburgh Expedition, June

08 June 2009

Forty two Lower 5 girls set off in groups from different locations around Woburn on their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition on Saturday.

For most of the girls it was their final qualifying expedition, and for a few their first practice.  They walked to Milton Bryan Camp site, following a pre-prepared route (or at least they should have followed their route - some seemed to get a little lost).

Everyone arrived safely at camp - although some a little later than others; they put up tents, cooked and compared stories before settling in for a good night's sleep.

The weather on Saturday morning was dreadful and everyone got thoroughly wet taking down tents and breaking camp.

However the girls were not at all deterred and set off on their second days walk in good spirits, and by mid-afternoon everyone had successfully arrived at their final checkpoint, having dried out in the sunshine en route.

Everyone should be congratulated on a good weekend.

Once again we thank Mrs Ross (who now has about 20 tents drying at home!), and the other adult and sixth form helpers - without whom the weekend would not have happened.

GCSE Results

Girls have once again achieved some truly excellent results in their GCSE examinations this summer. 29% of all results were at A* grade, 57% A*-A and 80% A*-B.

Carla Barberio, Rebecca Murray, Hannah Short and Surina Taneja all achieved 10A* grades, Tessa Forbes and Chloe Scott 9A* grades, Connie Fan, Yasmin Jamil and Frances Whittaker-Wood 8A* and Emily Myrtle, Lauren Roberts and Georgia Austin Greenall 7 A* grades.

Eighteen girls were sitting their examinations having spent, in most cases, only 3 years studying in English, and yet between them they amassed results which closely mirrored the overall percentages: 21% A*, 54% A*-A and 76% A*-B.

Although I am sad that our boarders are unable to progress to Bedford Girls' School for their Sixth Form studies, I am delighted that most of our very top achievers will be going on to take A level or IB courses there.

I wish every girl who left Bedford High School at the end of Upper 5 the very best of luck for their future studies.
