Eco Schools Silver Award

13 January 2010

Bedford High School for Girls was recently awarded the highly prized Eco School Silver Award.

Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.

To achieve the Silver Award, BHSG had to meet a tough set of criteria and the school's achievements included:

  • Using less gas: Saving about £9,000 and 90 tonnes of CO2 by using 442,031 kWh less gas between January and September 2009 compared with the same period in 2008.
  • Changing behavior to use less electricity: Saving over £12,000 and 62 tonnes of CO2 by switching off lights, computers etc and installing a new pool cover to reduce electricity consumption by an annual saving of 194,679 kWh - enough electricity to supply 48 homes.

1 tonne of CO2 equates to:

  • 1 giraffe
  • 1000 bags (kg) of flour or sugar
  • 14 women (about 11 stone)
  • 12 men (about 13 stone)
  • Or it could fill our swimming pool.
