The BGS Alumnae Mentoring Programme 2022/2023 is drawing to a close for the year with sixteen pairs having worked with each other over the course of the year.

This marks the sixth year we have run this successful programme as part of the school’s vision to equip our students for an ever-changing working world. Run in conjunction with The Alumnae, the programme is open to all students in the Lower Sixth to apply.

All the Mentors involved with the programme are alumnae. The programme offers them  a way of contributing to school life through helping our students widen their skills; whilst  also enhancing their own personal development. The programme starts to introduce The Alumnae community to the Sixth Formers and enables them to understand first-hand the supportive network of women supporting women as students move beyond school..

In each cohort, we endeavour to include Mentors from an array of different backgrounds, which this year has included those representing engineering, dentistry, beauty, education, marketing, and finance, amongst others.

Mentor, Sarah Worthington (née King, DAHS 1993) and Amelia Rayner (Upper Sixth) reflect on their year working together.

Sarah (Mentor) said: “It has been a pleasure to be a part of the BGS Sixth Form mentoring for the first time. I have been privileged to spend the year working with an inspiring young woman who has gained in self-belief and confidence throughout the year. It has been a great opportunity to reflect on my journey since leaving School and share my experiences to hopefully provide thought to my mentee's decision-making process. I look forward to working on the mentoring programme next year.”

Amelia (Upper Sixth) commented: “The BGS Alumnae Mentoring Programme allowed me to explore and discuss the many potential post-education pathways. My mentor provided me with insightful knowledge into the university application process as well as encouraging me to apply for the BGS Girls’ Leadership Group which resulted in me gaining a role as a sport’s prefect. I found that after each meeting, I gained confidence in myself and my decisions that will determine my future. Overall, this fantastic opportunity was not only an enjoyable experience but I have also acquired invaluable knowledge.”

We are very proud of the BGS Alumnae Mentoring Programme. If you are an alumna and would be keen to mentor in the future, please do get in touch with Emma MacKenzie in The Alumnae Office at [email protected]
